This class is geared toward advanced teen actors who are serious about their work.

Throughout this 6-week course, actors will perform scenes written by the greatest American playwrights, both past and present! Each student will get to work on two different scenes from two different eras in American Theatre History.

The overall objective of the class is to help actors improve their technique and learn how to approach both classical and contemporary texts.

First, we’ll tackle the beginning of the 20th Century with genres like Modernism, Absurdism, and American Realism covering playwrights such as Thornton Wilder (OUR TOWN), Tennessee Williams (THE GLASS MENAGERIE), Eugene O’Neill (LONG DAY’S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT), Arthur Miller (DEATH OF A SALESMAN), and Edward Albee (WAITING FOR GODOT).

These classic American playwrights are still heavily produced around the world today.

Next, we’ll focus on contemporary works from the late 20th century to today! Many of these playwrights are still releasing new work that is being produced on and off Broadway! Some of our students have recently starred in shows by these famous contemporary playwrights.

Playwrights whose work we may cover include: Neil Labute (THE SHAPE OF THINGS), Kenneth Lonergan (THIS IS OUR YOUTH), Tracy Letts (AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY), Sarah Ruhl (DEAD MAN’S CELL PHONE), Rajiv Joseph (GRUESOME PLAYWRIGHT INJURIES), Bess Wohl (MAKE BELIEVE), and David Auburn (PROOF).

Final Showcase: Each student will present two scenes from each era in the final class for family friends, and a few talent reps!

Can’t make every class? Not to worry, we will be offering a make-up class!
